EP 08: Minimalism to Create Space for Curiosity & Creativity

Minimalism seems like a funny thing to connect to curiosity or creativity. And I’m not saying you have to be a minimalist to be curious or creative. But for a lot of people, I think that our stuff whether physical, mental, or even emotional can have a dampening effect on our ability to have the white space or margin to give ourselves over to wondering and creating. Listen to this episode as we discuss why minimalism might be important for you and how it can help.

Favorite Resources (including the above books):

  • Cozy Minimalist Home: More Style, Less Stuff, by Myquillan Smith (Minimalism for your Home Decor)

  • The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing, by Marie Kondo (Some people love her book, some people hate it. I think it’s worth a read and there’s some good stuff in there but it’s also not a prescriptive way you HAVE to do it. It’s not going to work for everyone)

  • Organized Simplicity: The Clutter-Free Approach to Intentional Living, by Tsh Oxendrider (This was the first book of hers I read and one of the first for me on the topic of simplifying and minimizing. She’s got other AMAZING books that I love too so check those out also!)

  • Tsh’s The Art of Simple blog AND her podcast Simple (She is one of my favorite internet people!)

  • The Swap by Kendra of The Lazy Genius Collective (She only makes it available a couple times a year, so get on her email list so you don’t miss it the next go round. It is one of my favorite resources for decluttering and the mindset shift to make the ongoing maintenance easier)

  • Until that’s available again you can check out her podcast The Lazy Genius. She has lots of episodes related to this topic and great ways to shift your mindset in how we think about things.

  • If you’re looking for an online course to help you, Allie Casazza has a couple that I’ve heard really good reviews about HOWEVER, I have not taken any of them personally. If you have the room in your budget and are feeling really overwhelmed and just want someone to walk you through and help you get a jumpstart, then it might be a good fit, but do your own research to see. She also has a podcast The Purpose Show with a lot of episodes on minimalism and you could get more of a feel for her style and hear more about the courses she offers.
